Paithani Sarees

Paithani sarees are handwoven in Paithan (Pratishthana), Maharashtra, using pure mulberry silk with real gold zari, in a tapestry-weave technique where the weft threads are individually passed with small bobbins (a method called interlocking tapestry weave). The defining features of an authentic Paithani are the oblong mango motif (known as the bangdi mor or peacock border), the rich contrasting pallu woven in an all-over floral tapestry pattern, and the characteristic colour contrast between the body and the border. Paithani weaving received a GI tag in 2010.

A single authentic Paithani saree takes 2 to 24 months to complete depending on the complexity of the pallu design — the most elaborate pieces with a full peacock (mor) or kalgi pattern command prices above Rs 50,000. Greenways stocks both traditional handwoven Paithani from Paithan and Yeola weaver clusters, and power-loom Paithani-inspired sarees at accessible price points, clearly distinguished in each product listing.

Identification: turn the saree over — in a genuine handwoven Paithani, the reverse shows mirror-image weaving with loose weft threads visible at colour junctions; in a power-loom version, the reverse looks flat and printed. Authentic Paithani is dry-clean only. Available at our stores in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Lucknow for in-person verification before purchase.
