Dupion Silk Sarees
Dupion silk — also spelled Douppioni or Dupioni — is a medium-weight silk fabric woven from the irregular double-thread filament produced when two silkworm cocoons merge during the spinning stage. This natural irregularity creates visible slubs (thick-thin variations) across the fabric surface, giving dupion its distinctive textured, slightly rustic appearance and crisp hand. Unlike smooth mulberry silk, dupion has a firm body and holds its shape well — properties that make it particularly suited to structured garments and sarees with defined pleating.
Dupion sarees are popular as wedding and festive wear, combining the prestige of silk with a more textured surface than Kanjivaram or Mysore silk. They accept embroidery and zari work well without puckering. At Greenways, dupion sarees are available in single-colour plain weaves and in embroidered or printed versions, sourced primarily from Bangalore and Surat weaving centres.
Draping: dupion holds pleats exceptionally well due to its stiff hand, making it ideal for first-time saree wearers who want structure without pins. Dry-clean recommended to preserve the sheen and fabric body. Ironing at medium heat with a damp cloth prevents shine damage. Available for in-store viewing at our Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Lucknow stores.
