Muga Moonga Silk Sarees

Moonga silk — also known as Muga silk — is a rare golden wild silk produced exclusively in Assam, India, from the larvae of the Antheraea assamensis silkworm, which feeds on Som and Soalu plants native to the Brahmaputra valley. Muga is one of only three types of silk with a naturally golden colour — the others being yellow Mulberry and golden Tussar — but Muga's gold is the most intense and the most durable, actually deepening and brightening with age and sunlight rather than fading. Assam Muga silk has GI protected status, and its production is restricted to Assam.

Muga silk sarees are among the rarest and most valuable silk sarees in India — a single Muga saree requires several kilograms of cocoons and significant skilled labour to produce. The fabric has extraordinary durability; Muga garments hundreds of years old have been documented in Assamese royal families. At Greenways, Muga silk sarees are sourced from registered Assam weavers and are available as pure Muga and Muga-cotton blends.

Investment value: Muga silk does not require dyeing — its natural golden hue is its signature, and it deepens over decades. This makes it one of the few textiles that genuinely appreciates in beauty with age. Care: dry-clean only; store in a cotton muslin cloth, not plastic. Available at our stores across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Lucknow.
